A Gentle Way to Rest in God’s Presence

ree

Sometimes we need something simple.

Not a full devotion.

Not a long list of prayer requests.

Just a way to slow down and remember that we are not alone.

That’s what breath prayer has become for me—a quiet way to return to God throughout the day.

What Is Breath Prayer?

Breath prayer is a simple, grounding practice that connects your body and spirit in prayer. You pair a name of God with a heartfelt desire or need, and pray it in rhythm with your breath.

As you inhale, you call on the name of God.

As you exhale, you offer your request or surrender.

Over time, this quiet rhythm becomes a way to settle your heart, quiet your mind, and anchor yourself in God’s presence—especially when life feels hurried or heavy.

How to Begin

You don’t need a perfect prayer. Just start with stillness.

Breathe in slowly, letting your body relax

Breathe out fully, releasing what you’re holding

Ask yourself: What do I most want from God right now?

Your answer might be a single word like peace, guidance, or healing. Or a phrase like “Be near” or “Lead me.”

Then choose a name for God that speaks to your heart in this moment—Lord Jesus, Holy One, Spirit of Peace.

Your breath prayer becomes:

Breathe in: Spirit of Peace

Breathe out: Calm my anxious heart

Or:

Breathe in: Lord Jesus

Breathe out: I trust You

Let it be short. Let it be honest. Let it be enough.

Want to Create Your Own?

If you’re ready to shape a breath prayer that speaks directly to your heart, here’s a simple way to begin:

  1. Pause and ask yourself: What do I need from God right now?

  2. Name it honestly—don’t filter.

  3. Choose a name for God that feels tender or true.

  4. Put it together in two short lines: God’s name (inhale), your request (exhale).

  5. Repeat it slowly, letting the words move with your breath.

This isn’t about getting the words perfect. It’s about giving yourself a simple way to return to God—again and again.

A Practice for the Week

If you’re feeling scattered, tired, or unsure what to pray, try this:

Breathe in:  Lord Jesus

Breathe out:  Help me feel Your presence

Let that be your prayer for today. Let it meet you wherever you are.
