Clearing Space for What Matters Most

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
- Matthew 6:33

Simplicity: Trusting God and Focusing on What Matters Most

What is Simplicity?

Simplicity is the practice of focusing your heart on what matters most, seeking God’s kingdom and purpose, while letting go of the pursuit of possessions, wealth, or status.

Why Practice Simplicity?

Simplicity invites you to walk away from the pressures of culture and into the freedom of God's peace. While the world tells you that more is always better, simplicity reminds you that you already have enough in Christ. By clearing away worldly distractions, leaving less physical and mental clutter, simplicity creates space to focus on your relationship with Christ and live intentionally God's kingdom.

This practice begins within, as you release the demands of the world and center your heart on God’s presence. As inward simplicity takes root, it naturally flows outward, shaping the way you live, serve, and connect with those around you.

Practicing Simplicity

Simplicity unfolds in two parts: an inward journey of trust and surrender, and an outward expression of living with intention.

Inward Simplicity

Simplicity begins within. Before it can be expressed outwardly, it must first take root in our hearts. It’s about releasing the grip of anxiety over possessions and trusting that God’s care is enough. Inward simplicity creates space to focus on what truly matters: God’s presence and purpose in our lives.

Richard Foster highlights three inward attitudes that reflect this simplicity:

  • Receiving all that you have as a gift from God.

  • Knowing that it is God's role, not yours, to protect what you have.

  • Making your possessions available to others.

This inward focus centers your heart on God’s kingdom, freeing you from the pressures of the world and deepening your trust in God’s provision.

Outward Simplicity

As inward simplicity grows, outward simplicity flows naturally in your daily life and choices. Richard Foster suggests ten principles for living outward simplicity:

  • Buy things for their usefulness, not their status.

  • Reject anything that produces an addition in you.

  • Develop a habit of giving things away.

  • Resist the pull of advertising and unnecessary upgrades.

  • Learn to enjoy things without owning them.

  • Develop a deeper appreciation for creation.

  • Be skeptical of buy now pay later plans.

  • Obey Jesus' instructions about plain and honest speech.

  • Reject anything that breeds oppression of others.

  • Shun anything that distracts you from seeking first the kingdom of God.

Discover the Freedom of Simplicity

Practicing simplicity is not about rules but about freeing your heart to trust God fully. As you embrace this spiritual discipline, you’ll find space to live with purpose, serve with joy, and deepen your connection to Christ.
