Drawing Near to God Through Scripture

Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long.

Lectio Divina: A Sacred Practice of Divine Reading

What is Lectio Divina?

Lectio Divina—Latin for “divine reading” or “spiritual reading”—is the practice of prayerfully reading Scripture, allowing God to speak to you personally through the Word. Often, we think of prayer as beginning with our words to God, but Lectio Divina reminds you that prayer is first an invitation from God, who reaches out to you through Scripture.

Why Practice Lectio Divina?

At the heart of Lectio Divina is a desire to sit in God’s presence, seeking insight, wisdom, and guidance. Through this practice, you open yourself to hear the Spirit speak personally through Scripture, entering a conversation where you listen first and then respond. In this space, you offer yourself to the Holy Spirit, welcoming transformation from within.

Practicing Lectio Divina
To begin, choose a short passage of Scripture. Take a few moments to quiet your mind, releasing any thoughts, worries, or agendas, and sit in stillness with God. When you feel centered, move gently through each stage of Lectio Divina as described below. As you journey through each movement, consider recording your reflections in a journal.

The Four Movements of Lectio Divina

LECTIO (READ)

Begin by reading the passage of Scripture slowly and attentively, allowing each word to settle in your heart. As you read, open yourself to God’s invitation for an intimate conversation, noticing any word or phrase that the Spirit brings to your attention. Take your time with this step, rereading the passage as often as you feel led. Pause between readings, savoring the words and listening for God’s voice.

MEDITATIO (REFLECT)

Hold the word or phrase that stands out to you and reflect on its message. Let this reflection touch both your mind and your heart. What about this word or phrase resonates with your soul? How might it apply to your life today?

ORATIO (RESPOND)

After hearing and reflecting on God’s personal message to you, enter into a conversation with God through prayer. Open your heart to being transformed by the word or phrase you received. How is the Spirit inviting you to respond? Perhaps you feel led to worship, confess, give thanks, or take some action as a prayerful response to what you’ve heard. Whatever response arises in your heart, offer it to God with openness and sincerity.

CONTEMPLATIO (REST)

As your conversation with God comes to a close, rest quietly in God’s presence. Let go of words and thoughts, allowing yourself to simply be with God, embraced by divine love.
